The man suspected of swallowing a $13,000 jewel at a gem fair in Sri Lanka is now thought to have taken part in an even more audacious plot.
Police had thought the case solved when the man produced the jewel after being given a laxative at a hospital, but the gem he produced has now been revealed as a fake.
He is now suspected of swallowing his own fake jewel to create a diversion which allowed an accomplice to make off with the real one.
The man was found to be carrying several more fake gems in his pocket, suggesting that he made a practice of such crimes.
