A study by the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research has shown that waitresses can greatly increase their earnings in tips by changing into a red T-shirt.
Eleven waitresses in five restaurants in France wore the same kind of clothes every day, changing only the colours of their T-shirts, and the red T-shirts were found to earn between 15 and 26 per cent higher tips.
The improvement, however, was noticed only among male customers; females gave the same size tips whatever colour T-shirt the waitresses were wearing.
The researchers' concluded that: "As red colour has no negative effect on women customers, it could be in [the waitresses'] interest to wear red clothes at work.
