The EU Commission claims that duties have not been paid in full by Britain on imported garlic from China

Sunday, 24 Jun 2012

The European Commission is taking Britain to court over a claim that millions of pounds have not been paid in duty on imports of garlic.

The dispute centres on a regulation that imposes a lower rate of duty on frozen garlic from that due on fresh garlic with the Commission claiming that the UK carelessly imposed the lower rate on the fresh product imported from China.

Garlic is one of the oldest known crops and was fed to the builders of the Great Pyramid of Cheops in ancient Egypt in the belief that it gave them extra strength.

The only mention of garlic in the King James Bible is in chapter 11 of the Book of Numbers.
