YOM KIPPUR

A dispute broke out in Israel in 2010 over a custom called 'kaparot' performed by Ultra Orthodox Jews at Yom Kippur.

The custom, which is part of a ritual to cleanse practitioners from sin before the Day of Atonement, involves ritually sacrificing a chicken after whirling it around above one's head.

Some 2,000 Israelis in Tel Aviv signed petitions demanding an end to the public sacrifice of chickens.
