According to research published in 2003, walruses use their right flippers eight times as much as their left when eating. Analysis of videotapes of walruses scooping up molluscs from the sea bed showed that the acts of scooping and flicking the molluscs to clean them were performed 89 per cent of the time with the right flipper and only 11 per cent with the left.
