STAMMERING

Famous stammerers include Lewis Carroll, the Emperor Claudius and possibly Moses. Notker the Stammerer (840-912) was a poet, musician, author and Benedictine monk at the Abbey of Saint Gall in modern Switzerland. Louis the Stammerer was a 9th-century French King, son of Charles the Bald.

It is not known whether any of those followed the advice of Geronimo Mercuriali (1530-1606), who recommended reduced love-making as a cure for male stammerers.

Michael Palin based his stammering role in A Fish Called Wanda on his father who stammered all his life.
