LESBIANS

Inhabitants of the Greek island of Lesbos in 2008 took a gay organisation to court in an attempt to stop them using the word "lesbian". Lesbos was the birthplace of the ancient poet Sappho, who praised love between women but one of the litigants said the Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece, "insults the identity" of the people of Lesbos, who are also known as Lesbians.
