GERBIL

In 2008, the epidemic prevention division of the Changji city forestry bureau in China spent 80,000 yuan ($11,400) on gerbil contraceptive pellets after a plague of gerbils was said to be threatening the region's fragile ecosystem.

The state news agency explained that the pellets had little effect on other animals but could prevent pregnancy in gerbils and induce abortion in those already pregnant.
