Until 1980, the Dingo Barrier Fence in Australia had strong claims to be the longest man-made structure on Earth.
Constructed to protect sheep farms from wild dogs, it had a total length of 8,614km which according to general belief was longer than the Great Wall of China.
In 1980, however, the Dingo Barrier Fence was considered too long to be kept in a good state of repair and it was shortened by 3,000km to 5,614km, which was still greater than the commonly given figure of 5,000km for the Great Wall.
A full architectural survey in 2009, however, established the total length of the Great Wall of China to be 8,815.8km, which beats both the current Dingo Fence and even the old longer one.
