The first dog to be cloned was born in South Korea on 24 April 2005 and was named Snuppy (from the initials of Seoul National University and the final letters of 'puppy'). He was created from a cell taken from the ear of an adult Afghan hound. Snuppy was named as Time Magazine's 'Most Amazing Invention of 2005'.
In 2008, Snuppy also played his part in the birth of the first puppies from cloned parents when artificial insemination of his sperm in two female cloned dogs resulted in ten puppies.
The team that produced Snuppy went on to create the world's first cloned sniffer dogs in 2007. The six dogs, all of whom were named 'Toppy' (short for 'Tomorrow's puppy') started work for South Korea's customs service in 2009.
